What has to happen before we're licensed
Not a countdown — we won’t post a "weeks to license" number for a state unless the regulator actually publishes one, and most don’t. This is the real sequence in each target state, sourced from the licensing agency itself, so you know exactly what step we’re on rather than a vague "in process."
North Carolina
DHSR MHLCS application (10A NCAC 27G .5600). A Letter of Support from the regional LME/MCO (G.S. 122C-23.1) is a hard prerequisite — the application isn’t reviewed without it.
Tennessee
TDMHSAS Initial Application + Fact Sheet. Background checks, a financial statement, fire/life-safety review, then an on-site survey by the regional office.
Georgia
GA DCH / HFRD application via GAHLES. GCHEXS fingerprint checks for admins and any 10%+ owner, plus the fire/life-safety inspection.
Virginia
DBHDS CONNECT portal (12VAC35-105): Initial Applicant Orientation, a proctored exam (≥85% to pass), then an on-site inspection. DBHDS’s own published range for this sequence is roughly 6–12 months.
Delaware
DDDS provider enrollment, two-track: Residential Property Approval (RPAA) has to clear before the Division of Health Care Quality separately licenses the home — the two don’t run in parallel.
Arizona
ADHS BHRF application via the LMS portal (A.A.C. R9-10-106). A local fire inspection, and — outside Maricopa or Pima County — a public Notice of Formation published three times within 60 days before the LLC can even register.
Florida
AHCA (Assisted Living, Ch. 429) or APD (developmental-disability group homes, Ch. 393) — two distinct licenses, chosen by the population served, not two paths to the same one.
Fees are set per facility type and bed count by each agency, largely invoiced rather than published as one flat number — we don’t estimate them here rather than guess. Not legal advice; confirm current requirements directly with the agency.
