Accessibility
Built to be usable by everyone.
Last updated 27 August 2026
A project about housing people should be reachable by everyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, magnification, or reduced motion. We are committed to that, and we treat it as an ongoing responsibility, not a one-time box to check.
The standard we build to
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA - the benchmark referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. As a housing effort intended to serve people with disabilities, we hold ourselves to it deliberately.
What we have done
Last reviewed 6 October 2026. We would rather tell you what is still open than claim more than we have done, so the limitations below are real ones.
- Semantic, structured HTML that screen readers can navigate by headings and landmarks. Every page has a single main landmark.
- Text and background colors measured for AA contrast, not estimated. Every color pair that ships is computed and has to pass before we publish.
- Full keyboard operation, with a visible focus outline on every interactive element, and a "skip to content" link on every page that has navigation to skip.
- Meaningful alternative text, and decorative graphics hidden from assistive technology.
- Every form field has a real label, including the ones that show only a placeholder.
- Responsive layout that reflows cleanly down to small screens and up to 200% zoom.
- Respect for the "reduced motion" system setting.
Known limitations
Three things are honestly still open, and we are working on them:
- Our signed-in portal pages - the staff and family areas behind a login - have not had the same page-by-page review the public site has.
- A few guide pages jump a heading level (an h1 straight to an h3). It does not block anything, but it is untidy for screen-reader navigation.
- Some data tables do not yet mark which cell is the row or column header.
If something is hard or impossible for you to use, that is a gap we want to know about and fix.
As we grow
When Mai Heaven becomes an operating organization, this commitment extends to every tool residents and applicants touch - and this statement will be kept current and reviewed against the latest WCAG guidance.
