How much does a supported home cost?

Who actually pays — and why most eligible people pay little out of pocket.

For someone who qualifies, the cost is usually covered, not paid out of pocket: Medicaid (through an HCBS waiver) pays the support services, and the resident’s SSI pays room and board. Private-pay rates exist and vary widely by state and level of care — there’s no single national price. To get a real number, ask the specific home and your state Medicaid agency.

If the person qualifies for Medicaid + SSI

Most residents of Medicaid-funded supported homes pay little or nothing out of pocket: Medicaid’s HCBS waiver pays the services, and the resident’s SSI pays room and board (sometimes with a state supplement). That’s the two-stream model that funds a bed — see Does Medicaid pay for supported homes?

Private-pay rates vary a lot — by state, by the level of care and supervision, and by the home. There is no single national price, and we won’t quote one we can’t stand behind.
