Does Medicaid pay for supported homes in North Carolina?

How a supported-home bed is funded in North Carolina — with the official agency to verify.

Yes — in North Carolina, Medicaid pays the support services in a supported home through the NC Innovations Waiver (managed through the Medicaid Tailored Plans / LME-MCOs). There is a long Innovations waitlist (the “Registry of Unmet Needs”). It generally does not pay room and board (the resident’s SSI usually covers that), and Medicare does not pay for a supported-home bed. Verify eligibility and the waitlist with NC Medicaid / DHB.

The North Carolina waiver that pays

In North Carolina, the residential support services in a supported home are paid by the NC Innovations Waiver (managed through the Medicaid Tailored Plans / LME-MCOs). There is a long Innovations waitlist (the “Registry of Unmet Needs”). Medicaid funds the services; the resident’s SSI pays the room and board. The waitlist, and how to get on it

North Carolina keeps a statewide Registry of Unmet Needs (the Innovations waitlist); the state says the wait cannot be predicted and it is commonly reported at 10+ years. You get on it through your regional LME/MCO or the state NC DMH/DD/SUS line, 1-855-262-1946. Since 2024, IDD services also run through Tailored Plans — worth asking about while you wait.
