Does Medicaid pay for assisted living?

What Medicaid can and can’t cover in assisted living — and how it varies by state.

In many states, Medicaid can help pay for the care services in assisted living — through an HCBS waiver or a state plan option — but it generally does not pay the room and board. Whether it’s available, and which waiver, varies by state and often has a waitlist. Verify with your state Medicaid agency.

What Medicaid may cover in assisted living

Medicaid does not have a single national assisted-living benefit, but most states cover assisted-living services (personal care, supervision, some health supports) for eligible residents through a Medicaid HCBS waiver or state plan option. Room and board is generally excluded and paid another way (often SSI or the resident’s income).

It depends on your state

Availability, the specific waiver, income/asset limits, and waitlists differ by state. Start with your state Medicaid agency or your local ADRC (Eldercare Locator, 800-677-1116). Our waiver-by-state reference names the agency to contact in our nine states.
